Do what works…

This is my motto to all mothers.  I have discovered that there is no “right” way to mother.  Of course there are the standards – sleep your baby on it’s back, tend to it’s needs, etc.  However when it comes to all of the other things, there is no “master plan” that we can all follow.  For instance, I breastfeed Baby J but I will not get on my soapbox and look down on those who are not doing it.  It is a personal choice and sometimes not one you make for yourself.  I found that Baby J had an insane need to suck and in the beginning I constantly fed him.  Then my mom suggested a pacifier.  I came into motherhood being anti-pacifier because babies usually get hooked and it is a hard habit to break.  I have to tell you that when you are in the throes of motherhood, you do what works.  In this case a pacifier worked wonders.  Now I don’t have Baby J on a “schedule” yet for feeding and naps (what are those??).  He does his own thing in regards to the above mentioned.  However, we do what works for us.  I am not returning to work at the moment so I have the luxury of letting him do his own thing.  He has naturally fallen into a bit of a pattern for sleeping at night.  The feeding thing is something that does not have a true pattern yet.  Some mothers swaddle their babies while others have chosen not to do it.  I say that you just listen to your baby and meet his/her needs.  No two people are alike and no two babies are either.

I went to a new mom lunch yesterday at Kidville on the UWS.  I had won the entry and was looking forward to it since BCM has great events.  I was not disappointed.  I met some great new moms that live right near me.  I learned about this great device called the Itzbeen (I already ordered mine) which keeps track of everything your baby does.  This is something I had been doing on my iPhone anyway.  It was a very comfortable setting (I changed Baby J on the floor and nursed).  I was able to use my nursing cover by Hooter Hiders, which I won through Big City Moms at the holidays.  At this lunch I won the Mommy pass.  Big City Moms is going to be having lunches every Wednesday on the UWS and they will cover a different topic each week.  I encourage you to check one out since I think that you will end up going to the next one.  And there are always great gift bags and raffles (I have won something at every event I have attended).  Thank you to Big City Moms for keeping me sane and giving me a great reason to leave the house.

During pregnancy, I had a friend who told me that the Sleep Sheep was the best product ever made for white noise.  It helped put her daughter to sleep every night.  Of course, I went out and bought a sleep sheep immediately upon hearing this.  However, my cousin gave us a Carter’s bear that plays white noise for our baby shower.  It is soft and cuddly, perfect for a baby.  Once Hunter arrived, I started using the bear because it was the first one that I picked up from his crib.  I placed the bear in his pack n play and started using it to soothe him.  The bear lost it’s oomph and needed new batteries so I brought in the sheep as back up until I replaced the batteries on the bear.  I was a bit disappointed to find that the sheep did not do the job as well.  The sheep is not as loud as the bear and the volume control is a bit difficult to use.   We live in a NYC apartment and it is a bit loud in the background.  I found that the sheep could barely be heard above the noise from outside.  The bear, however, has no problem standing up to this outside noise and towers above it.  Also, the sheep is not as soft and cuddly so I would not put it up against Hunter like I have done with the bear already.

I would tell new parents that we have found success with this bear and hope that others can too.

Big City Mom event

I am going to another Big City Moms event on the Upper West Side – You just had a baby, now what? It is being held at Kidville, UWS on Wednesday, January 27th at 12 noon.   I actually won entry to this at a previous Big City Moms event.  I am excited to get out of the house and to be able to go somewhere in which my crying baby does not stand out (hopefully!).  Also, I am going to meet my friends baby for the first time too.  It should be a really fun day and Baby J and I are looking forward to attending.  Perhaps I will see some other UWS new moms there.

I have a few friends who are pregnant with girls or have been pregnant with girls.  And they have not been thrilled with being pregnant and have had a difficult time with their pregnancies.  Some gained a ton of weight or had edema.  Others suffered severe morning sickness.  Now, I had very little problems with any of the above.  I had nausea and it was annoying but nothing that could not be handled with saltines and ginger ale or ginger tea.  I ended up gaining most of my weight toward the end.  I loved being pregnant but was carrying a boy.  Did my carrying a boy have anything to do with me loving pregnancy?  Does gender influence your view of pregnancy?  I had come up with a theory that perhaps women enjoy pregnancy with boys more because of the hormone balance.  Boys are full of testosterone while girls have estrogen.  A women is going to be overloaded with estrogen with girls and maybe that is why they have difficult pregnancies or less enjoyable pregnancies.  Of course, this is a theory with nothing to back it up, just something I made up.   It is an interesting thought though, isn’t it?

Note: I have known women carrying girls who never complained about their pregnancies also.  I am not making the assumption that all women carrying girls complain.  However, I have not come across many women who  complained when carrying a boy.

We registered for the Precious Planet Whale of a Tub at BuyBuyBaby. It has turned out to be a really great tub.  This is reinforced by the fact that our little boy loves getting a bath.  I think this has a lot to do with the Bath Luve frog our friends got us.  It works so well at keeping him warm while he is getting a bath.  He does not like getting out of the tub and getting dressed does not really “work” for him.  He screams as I put on the lotion to moisturize.  Meanwhile I am trying my hardest to be swift about getting the onesie on him afterward.  This is made difficult by the stickiness of the baby lotion.  I have yet to perfect this process but will keep working on it.
